Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Rising Phoenix’s Partial Hospitalization Program offers a structured pathway to recovery, balancing intensive clinical care with the flexibility to maintain daily routines. Operating five days a week in an outpatient setting, our PHP allows clients to engage in comprehensive treatment while returning home each evening.

Clients enrolled in our PHP receive at least 20 hours of weekly multidisciplinary care, including individual and group therapy, psychiatric support, and integrated treatment models. Every element of the program is tailored to each individual’s unique clinical needs and recovery goals.

Throughout treatment, clients become part of a supportive clinical community, sharing experiences and gaining strength from one another. This therapeutic environment is essential for building connection, accountability, and lasting motivation.

Rising Phoenix Ensures a seamless transition to less intensive services, such as Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), following completion of PHP and best practice guidelines. This approach best supports clients as they progress towards independence and long-term recovery.

The Rising Phoenix Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a beacon of hope, blending professional guidance with a nurturing community and represents a confident step towards achieving a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Who Is PHP Right For?

Our Partial Hospitalization Program is designed for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient therapy can provide but do not require 24-hour residential care. You may be a strong candidate for PHP if one or more of these apply:

  • You are stepping down from an inpatient or residential program and need continued structure during the transition back to daily life
  • You are experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis that has not yet required hospitalization
  • You are experiencing symptoms that have caused you to miss work, school, family and social responsibilities or thinking about taking FMLA or medical leave
  • You have tried weekly outpatient therapy and found it insufficient to maintain stability
  • You are managing a co-occurring disorder, meaning both a mental health diagnosis and a substance use issue, and need integrated daily support
  • You have a stable home environment and support system that allows you to return home each evening

At Rising Phoenix, we conduct a thorough clinical assessment before admission to confirm that PHP is the appropriate level of care. If a different level of treatment, such as our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), is a better fit, we are committed to being transparent with you about that from the start.

What a Typical PHP Week Looks Like

Our Partial Hospitalization Program runs five days per week, with structured clinical programming for a minimum of 20 hours. A typical week at Rising Phoenix includes the following core components:

Individual Therapy

Each client is paired with a primary therapist and meets at least twice per week for one-on-one sessions focused on personalized treatment goals, trauma history, and measurable progress markers.

Group Therapy

Multiple daily group sessions address key areas of recovery, including cognitive behavioral skills, emotional regulation, relapse prevention, grief and loss, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Psychiatric Consultation

Clients meet regularly with our psychiatric team for medication management, diagnostic clarification, and support for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

Holistic and Integrative Therapies

Weekly sessions in yoga, acupuncture, personal training, and nutritional education support overall mental health by strengthening the mind-body connection and helping clients build healthy daily routines that extend beyond treatment.

Specialty Programming

Rotating specialty groups enhance the treatment experience through modalities such as equine-assisted therapy, art therapy, family therapy, compassion-focused therapy, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).

Case Management

Our team coordinates care with outside providers, assists with insurance verification, and manages discharge planning and step-down scheduling to ensure a smooth transition at every stage.

Most clients participate in PHP for two to six weeks before transitioning to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), though the timeline is always individualized based on clinical progress. At times, insurance coverage can dictate the client length of stay in PHP as well.

PHP vs. IOP — Understanding the Difference

Rising Phoenix offers both Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care. Here is how they compare:

PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program)
  • 20 or more hours of structured treatment per week
  • Five days per week with full daytime programming
  • Designed for higher acuity needs, crisis stabilization, or step-down from residential treatment
  • Includes daily access to psychiatric support
IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program)
  • 10 to 15 hours of treatment per week
  • Three to five days per week with morning or evening scheduling available
  • Appropriate for individuals who have stabilized and are building long-term recovery skills
  • Strong emphasis on community reintegration and independent functioning

Many clients begin at the PHP level and transition to IOP as they progress. Our clinical team monitors each client on an ongoing basis and adjusts the level of care when the time is right. This seamless continuum of care, from PHP to IOP to aftercare planning, is one of the most important advantages of choosing a single provider for your recovery journey.

Frequently Asked Questions About PHP

How long does PHP last?

Most clients participate in PHP for two to six weeks. The length of stay is determined by individual clinical progress, not by a fixed calendar. Some clients with more complex needs may continue for up to eight weeks.

Do I need to have gone through detox first?

If you are still in active withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, or other substances, medical detox is typically required before starting PHP. Our admissions team can connect you with a trusted local detox provider and coordinate your direct transfer into our program once you are medically stable.

Will my employer know I am in PHP?

No. Your participation in our program is protected by HIPAA. We do not share any information about your treatment without your written consent. If you need documentation for FMLA leave, our team can provide the appropriate forms without disclosing your diagnosis.

Can I bring my phone or laptop?

Yes. Because PHP is an outpatient program, you return home each evening and are not restricted from personal devices. During programming hours, we ask that phones are silenced to support the therapeutic environment.

What happens after PHP?

Most clients step down to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which meets three to five days per week for three hours each day and allows for greater integration of work, family, and daily responsibilities. After IOP, we assist with aftercare planning including ongoing outpatient therapy, peer support, and community resources.

Is PHP covered by insurance?

Most commercial insurance plans, employer-sponsored plans, and PPO policies cover PHP. Coverage varies by plan. Our admissions team verifies your benefits before your start date so there are no surprises.

These FAQs aim to provide you with valuable insights into IOP programs, helping you make informed decisions about your mental health treatment options. If you have more specific questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to the program administrators for guidance and clarification.
