If you or someone you love needs medical detox, Rising Phoenix can help, even though we do not provide detox services ourselves. Our admissions team works directly with trusted detox facilities in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area to coordinate a seamless handoff, so that the moment you are medically stable, you step directly into the structured recovery programming you need to stay well.

What Is Medical Detox?

Medical detox is the supervised process of safely clearing alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or other substances from the body while managing withdrawal symptoms. Depending on the substance, withdrawal can range from deeply uncomfortable to medically life-threatening. Attempting to detox without supervision is not only difficult, but it can also be fatal.

Substances for which medical detox is strongly recommended or required before outpatient treatment include:

  • Alcohol: Alcohol withdrawal is one of the few withdrawal syndromes that can be life-threatening. Severe alcohol withdrawal can produce seizures and delirium tremens (DTs), a condition that requires immediate medical intervention. Anyone who drinks heavily and daily should not attempt to stop without medical supervision.
  • Benzodiazepines: Withdrawal from benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Ativan) carries risks similar to alcohol withdrawal, including seizures and severe anxiety. A medically supervised taper is essential.
  • Opioids (including Fentanyl and Heroin): While opioid withdrawal is not typically fatal, it is intensely uncomfortable. Severe enough that many people relapse during the process to relieve symptoms. Medical supervision and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) initiation during detox dramatically improve outcomes.
  • Cocaine: Cocaine withdrawal is primarily psychological (depression, fatigue, intense cravings) rather than medically dangerous, but in cases of severe psychosis or suicidal ideation, a brief medically supervised stabilization period may be warranted.

Why Rising Phoenix Doesn’t Provide Detox

Rising Phoenix is a licensed outpatient treatment provider offering PHP and IOP levels of care. Our clinical environment is specifically designed for individuals who are medically stable (past the acute withdrawal phase) and ready to engage in the intensive therapeutic work of recovery to increase self-awareness, develop refined coping strategies, and cultivate their inherent strengths.

This focus is deliberate to maintain clinical excellence. By operating exclusively at the outpatient level, we are able to invest in the depth of clinical programming, therapeutic expertise, and individualized care that produces lasting outcomes. We refer clients to detox when needed and bring them into our program immediately upon completion.

Our Detox Referral Process

When you contact Rising Phoenix and we determine that medical detox is the right first step, here is what happens:

  1. Assessment: Our admissions team conducts an initial clinical screening to understand your substance use history, the substances involved, your medical history, and your level of physical dependence.
  2. Referral: Based on your clinical picture, we connect you with a trusted local detox provider appropriate for your specific needs.
  3. Coordination: With your consent, we share relevant clinical information and insurance details with the detox facility to ensure continuity of care and appropriate treatment planning.
  4. Reservation: We reserve a spot in our PHP or IOP program for you so there is no gap between detox completion and beginning structured outpatient treatment.
  5. Transition: When you are discharged from detox, typically within 4 to 8 days, depending on the substance and your medical situation you begin at Rising Phoenix without having to restart the admissions process.

This coordinated transition is one of the most important things we can do to protect your recovery. Research consistently shows that the period immediately following detox is among the highest-risk windows for relapse. Having a clear, immediate next step, with professionals who already know your situation, dramatically reduces that risk and improves overall successful outcomes.

Detox Is the Beginning, Not the Treatment

This is one of the most important things to understand about recovery from substance use disorders: detox clears the body, but it does not treat the addiction. The neurological, psychological, behavioral, and relational dimensions of addiction require sustained therapeutic engagement to address.

Many people complete detox feeling physically improved and believe they can manage on their own only to relapse within days or weeks because nothing has changed in the patterns, environments, and coping mechanisms that drove the addiction. The transition from detox directly into PHP or IOP is not optional, it is the essential next chapter for lasting outcomes.

At Rising Phoenix, our PHP program provides 20 or more hours per week and IOP programs provide 10-15 hours per week of structured treatment including individual therapy, group counseling, psychiatric support, and specialty programming. This level of intensity is what the post-detox period requires.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need medical detox?

If you drink alcohol heavily and daily, use opioids regularly, or take benzodiazepines regularly, medical detox is strongly recommended before starting outpatient treatment. Our admissions team can help you make this determination during a brief phone screening.

How long does detox take?

Detox length varies by substance and severity. Alcohol detox typically takes 4 to 8 days; opioid detox typically takes 5 to 10 days; benzodiazepine detox can take longer depending on the taper protocol. Our admissions team can give you a more specific estimate based on your situation.

What if I cannot afford detox?

Most commercial insurance plans cover medical detox. If you do not have insurance, our admissions team can discuss options including self-pay rates and payment plans with partner detox facilities.

Will I lose my spot in Rising Phoenix’s program if detox takes longer than expected?

No, we work with each client individually on timing. Please communicate with our admissions team throughout your detox stay and we will ensure a smooth transition into our PHP or IOP programs that meet your needs post detox.

Is there any wait time to get into PHP after detox?

Our goal is zero wait time. When we coordinate your detox referral, we schedule your PHP or IOP start date concurrently so you transition directly.

What if I completed detox somewhere else and am now looking for the next step?

Welcome. You do not need to have been referred by our team to begin PHP or IOP at Rising Phoenix. Call us at (480) 618-4791 and we will schedule your intake assessment immediately.

Mental health and substance use are often interconnected. Mental Health issues may be precipitated by use of drugs and alcohol or may lead to addiction to substances or compulsive processes. They often develop to self-medicate overwhelming thoughts and emotions.
